Questions for Educational Robotics - ENGINO MINI & LEGO WeDO
Question (28/05/20205): Can we use plexiglass with water, e.g. 40 cm x 25 cm, and general water (to be fed into our structure), but always with caution and in limited quantities so as not to damage robots or other teams?
Answer: The theme of the event is water, so there is no problem with what you have in mind.
Question (28/05/2025): Can there be printing on the back and bottom of the structure as a background or floor, such as the one shown at https://www.flickr.com/photos/nicks-brick-land/14304267024/, but with the back printed? Answer: Yes, it can be there, provided that the height of the background does not obstruct/affect the view of other structures or is disproportionate in size compared to the rest of the structure.
- Can we use elements from the LEGO package shown below? Yes, you can!
- The bricks of ENGINO MINI & LEGO WEDO.
The bricks must be original/authentic bricks by Engino or Lego. You can use bricks from the Mini package or any other Engino platform. You can use bricks from the WeDO package or any other LEGO platform.
- Does the robot for LEGO WEDO & ENGINO MINI be just one? For example, one motor, one tilt, one sensor, one battery-hub? Or can we use more than one components from each?
You can use any number of components you wish as long as the components are original/authentic for the corresponding platform.
- Apart from the robot, can we use an extra battery for an extra motor to generate movement or light? For example to create a windmill?
You can use as many components/parts for Engino Mini and Lego WeDO competitions, as long as the parts are original/authentic Engino or Mini parts. You are not allowed to use ARDUINO parts/components for the Engino Mini and Lego WeDO competitions.
- What programming language can we use?
There is no limitation as to the type of programming language that you can use.
- Can we have a poster behind our construction?
No, this is not possibe.
- Can we have printed labels writing, for example: Hospital, School or in general to indicate the type of the entity that is not clearly identifined?
No, this is not possible.
- If we want to create a building or a bridge, what materials can we do it? The levels with mat material and the rest with WeDO or Mini?
You can see the regulations that specify the additional materials you can use. There is also a floor that may be used. Question (03/06/2025): What are the dimensions and weight of the robot in Engino Sumo?
Answer: The dimensions are 22 cm x 22 cm and the weight 1 kg.

- Please clarify in which SUMO competitions soldiers and students can participate in.
- Soldiers and students can participate in all competitions under the ADULTS category.
- What is the perimeter of the Dohyo in the SUMO competition?
- Please refer to the competition rules for SUMO.
- In LEGO SUMO, you state that the robot must be made from LEGO products. Do you mean only LEGO EV3, as there are other LEGO products with more powerful motors, and it would be unfair to those who do not have them? Therefore, we need to know if we need to purchase them.
- All available LEGO platforms can be used for the competition.

Question (24/05/2025): In the Lego Archery challenge, can we create the arrow with non-Lego materials?
Answer: Due to the uniqueness of the particular element of the challenge, yes you can use non-Lego materials to create it. You can follow a 3D-printing process to do it. Please note that you will have to abide to any safety issues and rules and ensure that the materials do not create any harsh on the surface of the target field.
Question (24/05/2025): Who provides the safety glasses for our team?
Answer: The coach is responsible to provide his/her team with the safety glasses.
Question (28/05/2025): How many motors can we use?
Answer: Up to 6 motors. How you use the motors is up to you.
Question (28/05/2025): Can we use rubber bands? If so, do they have to be Lego rubber bands?
Answer: You can use Lego rubber bands.
Question (28/05/2025): Will the ball be provided by the organisers?
Answer: Yes, the ball will be provided by the organisers. For training purposes, please note that this is a standard tennis ball.
Question (28/05/2025): The balls to be used are the ones we can find in Jumbo? Will they be provided by the Organizers?
Answer: Yes, the balls are the ones available at Jumbo and will be provided by the Organizers.
Common Issues for Various Challenges
Clarificiation (29/05/2025): The following clarifications are necessary because the rules for the competitions mentioned are the same for all platforms.
Please note: for the Girls FireFighting, FolkRace and Enhanced Line Following competitions using the LEGO platform:
- The robot must be constructed exclusively from authentic LEGO or HiTechnic materials. Cables used in the robot are excluded – cables must be authorised components from LEGO, HiTechnic or Mindsensors.
- The parts used must be in their original condition and must not have been modified in any way.
- The robot must only use batteries or battery packs recommended by LEGO.
Question (24/05/20205): When is the final program of the event issued?
Answer: Generally, the final program of the event is published two weeks before the dates of the event.
- For the students without an identity card, can we bring a birth certificate?
Yes you can, either a birth certificate or a passport.
- Can we bring copies of identity card of students?
Yes you can bring a copy of the identity card showing the content of both sides on one page.
- How many controllers can use for the robot?
You can use only one controller for the robot. This applies for all competitions.
- We have only two robots at our school. Can we bring four teams with two teams sharing/using the same robot?
Two teams can use the same robot in two or more different competitions. For example, Team A to use a robot in Line Following and Team B to use the same robot in SUMO. You can not use a robot more than once in any single competition.
- In my team we have two persons who attend the Lyceum and one person who attends the Gymnasium. Is this allowed?
The rules are very clear on this issue. In general, the members of the team must belong in the same category/level. However, it is allowed to have ONE player of category/level X to participate in a team of category/level+1. In this case the answer is yes, it is allowed provided that the team is registered as team for "Lyceum (Gymnasium 4th-7th)".
The opposite is not allowed. Please refer to the corresponding rules of the competition you are interested in.
- Can the coach participate in the competitions of his category (eg: adults)?
In the university and adults categories, yes it is possible for a coach to participate as player in a team.
