Cyprus Presence at MRC Crete 2025

Cyprus Presence at MRC Crete 2025
International Awards for Robotics Teams from Public and Private Institutions
The Cyprus Computer Society (CCS) proudly announces that Cyprus had a strong presence at the MRC (Minoan RobotSports Competition) Global Olympiad 2025, held in Crete from April 11 to 14, with participation from 50 countries.
Student robotics teams from public and private schools and institutions represented Cyprus with excellence, achieving remarkable results and enhancing the country’s international image in the field of educational robotics.
Special mention goes to the student teams trained by educator Yiannis Laouris from Y. Laouris Informatique in Paphos, which returned with an impressive number of awards. The teams secured a total of 21 podium positions, including 5 first, 10 second, and 6 third places in challenges such as Drones Soccer, Drone Flying, Shot Put and Water Polo, demonstrating their high level of training and preparation.
Public schools also achieved notable success in the Drones competition (ages 13–18):
- 1st Place: Team Lighting (Dusty Force), TESEK Ammochostos/Avgorou, coached by Evangelia Oikonomou & Andreas Kile
- 2nd Place: RoboTesek, TESAEK Paralimni, coached by Andri Christofi
- 6th Place: Robomac, TESEK Makarios III Nicosia, coached by Anna Parpa
- 7th Place: Technopilots, Akaki Regional Gymnasium, coached by Christakis Kyprianou
In the 10–13 age category of the Drones competition, 5th place was awarded to Fortnite Duo from The G C School of Careers, coached by Nikolas Nikolaou.
Cyprus also had a powerful presence in the Archery Robotics event, with the participation of:
- Cyber Arrow, from Eurolab Kokkinotrimithia, coached by Kyriakos Iacovou
- Robot Legends, from Strovolos Municipal Open School, coached by Antonis Phoinikarides
A remarkable moment was the alliance between students from Greece and Cyprus (TESEK Avgorou/Ammochostos & Laouris), which led to significant awards in Drones Soccer. Specifically, Alliance 5 (Team Lightning, Metashifters Phoenix, Mindlab 12S) won 1st place, while Alliance 4 (Dusty Force, Robotzeedes Elite, Laouris Seven) secured 2nd place.
The CCS congratulates all participating students and extends its sincere gratitude to the Research and Innovation Foundation for its vital financial support of the Cypriot delegation on this important journey in robotics, education, and science. We also highlight and celebrate the outstanding contributions of three female educators whose leadership guided their teams to major achievements: Evangelia Oikonomou, Anna Parpa, and Andri Christofi — paving the way for increased female participation in robotics events!
The delegation was accompanied by dedicated volunteers Dr. Alexis Polycarpou (Associate Professor at Frederick University) and Mrs Fotini Georgiou (Research Engineer and STEM educator, ECECT), members of the Board of IET Cyprus and the Scientific Committee of Robotex MRC Cyprus.
The next national event, Robotex MRC Cyprus, will be held on the last weekend of June 2025 at the University of Cyprus. Registrations are now open, and we invite you to participate for a chance to represent Cyprus in the upcoming international competitions (Robotex International – Estonia & MRC – Crete).
